Types of Drainage systems
There are 4 main types of drainage systems:
- Surface - usually installed in yards, around slab foundation, and in crawl spaces. They can come in a variety of sizes and can be placed in many different places around a property. They are especially helpful with dealing with heavy rainfall and draining a yard of excess rainwater quickly. Shallow ditches are often used to guide water towards the main drains.
- Subsurface (French Drains) - French drains are installed directly next to a home's foundation. They are placed beneath the top layer of soil in order to remove excess rainwater at the root level. They involve digging deep ditches and the installation of underground pipes. Subsurface drains are especially effective at preventing heaving which is the upward movement of a foundation caused by underlying soil swelling. Pooling water seeping into the ground is often the cause of this. These drains are also great for preventing crawl space damage, soil saturation, and protecting concrete slab foundation.
- Slope - guides water downward from a structure with the help of pipes. Pipes are installed along the incline which allows water to flow along the slope, through the pipe, and away from the structure.
- Gutters/downspout - when your gutters collect rain water on your roof the water is guided towards a downspout which are usually installed on the corners of a building. The downspout is the pipe that leads water from your gutters to the ground
